Silk hankies, also known as mawata, are a special preparation of silk cocoons. The softened cocoons are stretched over a frame to spread the silk fibres apart to make a sheer fabric like preparation. Silk hankies are typically spun by making a small hole in the centre of it with your finger and then enlarging the hole until you have a large ring of fibre. The ring is broken and can either be spun as is or can be drafted to make a fine, textured silk single.
